FOR SALE: South African Delivered 1954 Citroen Traction Avant Light 15 (RHD)
This is a British-built 1954 Citroen Traction Light 15 (RHD). It originally was sold in South Africa and then spent two years in Botswana. It laid in a barn in the Gatineau hills in Quebec from 1976 to 2005 when I removed it from the barn and restored it mechanically. The body was redone with a bare-metal respray in 2010 after a rear-end collision.
Mechanically– The engine is from a 1963 ID-19 Citroen which means it has a stronger crankshaft with insert bearings as opposed to the original bearings which are poured. The original engine block is not available. The cylinders and pistons were replaced, the bearings were in good condition as there was only 19,000 kilometers on the block when I bought it and did the minor modifications required to install it. the head is rebuilt, the crank and flywheel are balanced, the carb is new, the starter, generator, water pump and fuel pump have all been rebuilt. An external oil filter has been added. The clutch and gearbox are in good order. The front wheel drive shafts have been replaced with modern CV-joint shafts. The front brake drums are new, the brakes have been redone but it needs a master cylinder which I will replace when it arrives soon. The car has been fully rewired to make it more reliable with fuses for everything and relays for the high & low beams and horn. I rewired the car 10 years ago and have not ever had any electrical problems,
considering that the major electrical components are mostly Lucas. Air horns from a DS-21 have been added. The now-expensive Michelin 165-400X tires are in very good condition. The spare is a South African made Dunlop.
Body– there has never been any rust that I am aware of, having been in South Africa for most of its life. The car was rear ended in 2010, and the body shop did a masterful job of pulling the body straight on a frame-puller. All of the paint was removed and no rust was found under the paint. The bumpers have been rechromed, all other plated items are in very good condition. There is a very rare original roof rack mounted on the car and an outside sun visor which is likely the only one in North America as it was made in Durban, South Africa.
Interior– The seats were redone in leather, the carpet and headliner were replaced. The door panels have never been disturbed as long as I have owned the car. The painted woodgrain window frames are original and in so-so condition. The instruments all are in working order except the clock.
The car runs, drives, shifts and stops well. It’s a lot of fun and the only reason I am selling is that I want to move on to another project.
All offers are gratefully received. We always make every effort to negotiate a good deal.
